International Friends of Festival Verdi Spring Gala

The International Friends of Festival Verdi announced their plans for their 22nd season at dinner in a private club and limited to just 180 guests on April 28th.  The evening was curated by chef Massimo Bottura and his team from Osteria Francescana, the three-Michelin-star restaurant based in Modena, known as the hardest reservation to get in the world!

The Mayor of Parma, Federico Pizzarotti, The Scientific Director of Teatro Regio, Francesco Izzo, and Teatro Regio di Parma's General Director, Anna Maria Meo, and the president of the International Friends of Festival Verdi, James E. Miller and executive director Silvia Frieser, announced the program for the coming season (September 22 through October 16th) and the beauty of, “seeing Verdi in the land of Verdi, to live where he lived, performed in theaters where he worked, with the sound as he knew it, having the food and wine he knew grown in his own terroir.”  This is the unique proposition of Festival Verdi.  In 2022 the performances include three staged operas La Forza del DestinoIl Trovatore, and Simon Boccanegra each based on a contemporary Spanish play that Verdi admired.  These seminal works were brought to his attention through the talented actress Margherita Barezzi, his then mistress and later his second wife, who spoke fluent Spanish.  This is a unique chance to consider these works side by side.

The menu was presented in an emotional speech by Massimo Bottura who took great pains to explain the dishes, their preparation, and what they represented to him – an edible autobiography.  The spectacular hors d’oeuvre and five course meal, made with ingredients of the region and paired with its wines, provided topics of conversation making the room instantly one.  Courses included “Beautiful, Psychedelic Spin Painted Veal”, which was a tribute to Damien Hirst and a deconstructed “Crunchy Part of the Lasagna,” a tribute to the chef’s mother.

The evening also offered superb music by soprano Eleonora Buratto performing Verdi’s tragic aria, Morrò, ma prima in grazia from Un Ballo in Maschera followed by Un bel di from Madam Butterfly ---the role she is currently performing at The Met.  It brought tears to many eyes.

The evening’s guest of honor was conductor Ricardo Frizza who has been thrilling audiences with The Met’s Lucia di Lammermoor.  Other guests included Bill Buford and Jessica Green, Francois Payard, Ruth Reichl, Barbara Tober, and Laurent Tourondel.

Krug Celebrates Les Creations de 2008 with Chloe Flower and Chef Angie Mar

Nicknamed “Classic Beauty,” Krug 2008 is arguably the most highly anticipated Champagne release of the 21st century. To mark the momentous occasion, the centuries-old Champagne House and Chloe Flower collaborated on two musical pairings inspired by the creations of the year, opening new gateways to the senses.

The first to experience the sought-after Creations of 2008 – Krug 2008 and Krug Grande Cuvée 164th Edition – were a maverick group of Krug lovers, musicians, and creators including Prabal GurungBabyfaceAmanda NguyenPhilip LimEzra Williams, and Sally Lapointe among others, who joined Krug and Chloe for a performance, tasting, and dinner – a sensorial trifecta.

“For centuries, my family has been defying conventions,” says Olivier Krug, Director of the House and sixth generation of the Krug family, “which is why today this non-conformist spirit lives on in everything we do.” That spirit is mirrored in Flower’s own genre-bending approach to music and brought to life in the compositions she created with the House. After debuting these Champagne-inspired pieces at Brooklyn non-profit music venue National Sawdust – “Echoes of 2008” and “Grande Cuvée,” Chloe invited guests next door for a unique dining experience inside Alan Eckstein’s Somerset House, an impeccably curated collectible design shop for a stunning French pairing menu by another Krug lover, the visionary Chef Angie Mar.

When speaking of what makes Krug 2008 such a beautiful wine, Cellar Master Julie Cavil notes “Due to the cool and balanced climate of 2008…the grapes could take their time to mature in tranquility, ultimately exhibiting beautiful freshness upon harvest. Surprisingly, despite these mild and constant conditions, we observed great heterogeneity from plot to plot. The beauty of this contrast was the inspiration to blend complementary flavors from different plots including Ay, Bouzy and Ambonnay. Krug 2008 is a great classic of the House.”

Of her composition process, Chloe notes: “The way I approach composing parallels how Krug picks its grapes. Each sound has a critical and emotional responsibility. I play out each instrument separately, violins, violas, horns, percussion, to finetune each voice and its individual role in the greater composition. It is very similar in process to creating a bottle of Krug, and I think that is what produces the best experience in both taste and sound. You enjoy the final arrangement but cannot decipher every individual detail that went into creating it. Instead, you experience something effortless with rich harmonies and depth.”

Krug 2008 and Krug Grande Cuvée 164th Edition are available now for purchase via privateclient@moethennessy.com. Chloe’s compositions will be available on Spotify and Apple Music on Friday, November 5, should your readers be interested in experiencing the music pairings on their own. A link to Chloe’s current album is available to listen here. We are also happy to coordinate an interview with Chloe or Krug Cellar Master Julie Cavil, if you’re interested in learning more about the Creations of 2008 and the parallels between Krug and music.

Last week, champagne Bollinger celebrated their 40+ year relationship with 007 with an advanced screening of Bond’s highly anticipated latest film, No Time To Die, at iPic New York City. I have some first photos from the exclusive Cinema Society screening event to share with you, featuring attendees including Christopher Meloni, Dale Moss, Nina Agdal, Jonathan Cheban, Prabal Gurung, Johnathan Fernandez, Sophie Sumner and more.

For over 40 years, Bond has been the quintessential partner for Bollinger as the two share many values in common: excellence, authenticity, and elegance. It was only natural that the most British of champagnes and the most British of secret agents should come together. Last night at iPic, guests raised a glass to Daniel Craig’s final adventure as James Bond with Bollinger’s Limited Edition Special Cuvée, the Official Champagne of the movie franchis.
