Inside The New York Junior League Savor the Spring

On April 29, the New York Junior League (NYJL) held Savor the Spring: The Secret Garden at the organization's Astor House headquarters on the Upper East Side.  Since 1901, the NYJL has responded to New York City’s most pressing socioeconomic challenges. Powered by more than 2,300 women volunteers, the NYJL works with more than 60 community-based organizations to advance children’s social-emotional learning and to provide life skills programs to youth and adults who are navigating periods of difficult transition.  Proceeds from Savor the Spring and other fundraisers support the NYJL's community and advocacy work and leadership development.

Savor the Spring attendees experienced an evening of sommelier-led wine tastings,  perfectly curated hors d’oeuvres, a live band, and silent and live auctions featuring luxury items and curated trips. VIPs enjoyed early admission with a dedicated champagne hour with oyster service, coupled with surprises throughout the night and signature cocktail tastings – hidden in the VIP only speakeasy – as well as an amazing gift bag!  Sponsors included Ette Vodka, Bleu Royal Spirits, and Harlem Standard.  The event was sold out with a record-breaking 100 VIP guests, leading to a revenue of $118,000.

The Beat Goes On: Learn about NYC’s Thriving Music Scene

New York City is one of the world's most vibrant and diverse musical cities. From jazz to hip-hop, pop to classical, the city is home to a wide range of musical genres and venues. Music has always been a significant part of the city's cultural heritage, and it continues to play an essential role in the city's economic and social development.

Economic Impact

Music is a significant contributor to the city's economy. According to a study by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, the music industry generates $21 billion in economic activity and supports over 60,000 jobs in New York City. The sector encompasses various activities, including live performances, recording studios, music publishing, and music education.

#1 Live Performances

Live performances are a significant contributor to the city's music industry. The city has many iconic music venues, such as Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, and the Apollo Theater, which attract local and international artists and generate significant revenue for the city. In addition, the city hosts many music festivals, such as the Governors Ball and the Electric Zoo, which attract thousands of visitors and generate millions of dollars in revenue.

#2 Recording Studios

New York City also has a thriving recording industry, with many world-renowned studios, such as Electric Lady Studios, Avatar Studios, and Platinum Sound Recording Studios. These studios attract artists worldwide, and their output contributes significantly to the city's music industry. They may also be responsible for the rise of several millennial properties in the city.

#3 Music Publishing

Music publishing is another crucial aspect of the city's music industry. Many of the world's largest music publishers, such as Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music, have headquarters in New York City. These publishers generate significant revenue from licensing music for use in films, television shows, and commercials.

#4 Music Education

Music education is also an essential component of the city's music industry. The city is home to many prestigious music schools, such as the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. These schools provide world-class training to aspiring musicians and contribute to developing the city's music industry.

Trends

The music industry is constantly evolving, and New York City is at the forefront of many of these trends. One significant trend in the industry is the rise of streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music. These services have disrupted the traditional music industry model, and the city's music industry has had to adapt to these changes.

Another trend in the industry is the growing importance of social media. Many artists use social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter to connect with fans and promote their music. Social media has also allowed for the democratization of the music industry, allowing independent artists to gain exposure and build a following without the backing of a record label.

Opportunities

Despite the challenges posed by technological advancements and changes in consumer behavior, the New York City music industry continues to offer many opportunities for aspiring musicians and entrepreneurs. One significant opportunity is the city's thriving live music scene. The city's many music venues provide a platform for artists to showcase their talents and build a following.

Another opportunity is the city's vibrant music education scene. The city's music schools offer world-class training to aspiring musicians, providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the industry.

Conclusion

The city's music industry encompasses various activities, including live performances, recording studios, music publishing, and music education. Inside The Casita Maria Fiesta at The Plaza Hotel

“It is a dream come true to be back here after these last few years”, said Jackie Weld Drake, Casita Maria Board Chair and benefit Co-Chair with HRH Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia as they welcomed over 300 guests to Casita Maria Fiesta 2022. Last night the celebration returned to New York City at The Plaza Hotel for the first time since 2019, before the covid pandemic, to honor Latino pioneers Tony Bechara, Cesar Conde, and Gaby Pacheco with the Gold Medal of Honor. Jackie continued, “We dedicate tonight to the memory of Anne Eisenhower who was on our board for 25 years, many of which she chaired Fiesta with me. We always wanted this to be the best party in New York!”

Daniel Brodsky presented the Casita Maria Gold Medal of Honor to his great friend, Tony Bechara, and shared, “Born in San Juan, Tony is a successful, prolific, abstract artist who has been living and working in New York City for more than 40 years. Tony has had exhibitions in New York, Washington, Miami, San Juan, Lima, Mexico, and Munich. He has always devoted his time making available and encouraging art for all, especially Latin Americans and Latino artists.” Tony thanked the crowded ballroom, saying, “To be introduced by Dan Brodsky is already an honor. I want to thank Casita Maria because many, many years ago, more than 70 years ago, waves of compatriots of mine from Puerto Rico were arriving here in New York looking for a better life. New York being the beacon of hope. There was no one to help them. Casita Maria filled that void. They were the first to do it.”

George Corton bestowed Cesar Conde with his Medal of Honor, “Cesar serves as Chairman of the NBCUniversal News Group, overseeing NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC. He is the first Hispanic to lead a major English-language broadcast news organization! As a leading voice towards representation and diversity in the newsroom, Cesar launched the 50% challenge initiative, which inspires newsrooms to be 50% women and 50% people of color!”

Jorge Plasencia introduced honoree Gaby Pacheco who’s “especially known for her work with Dreamers, children who were brought to the United States and grew up here without legal documentation.” In an emotional speech, Gaby said, “I shouldn’t be here. The laws tell me that even though this is the country that I love and this is my home, I shouldn’t be here. When I was a little girl and I came to the United States, I didn't speak English, I didn't have friends, and I was scared. Today I stand before you knowing that I have power, that my story matters, and that every single Latino child deserves the right to fulfill their dreams and their lives.”

Guests included Dinner Chairs Adriana Echavarria, and Sissi Isabel Fleitas-Refaie, Committee Members Geoffrey Bradfield, Michele Gerber Klein, Ann Nitze, and Ben Rodriguez-Cubenas, Pachanga Chairs Victor Roquette and Sabrina Wirth, Pachanga Committee Members Cathy Aragon, Carlos Barraza, and Omar Hernandez, as well as Afsaneh Akhtari, Steven M.L.
