About The Business of Partying:

9781663215642_p0_v1_s600x595.jpg

Written by Alana Udwin, The Business of Partying examines the production, creativity, and strategy behind nightlife hospitality. The nightlife industry encompasses operating a nightclub, bar or other evening destination and marketing the "night out" experience. While not an easy business, it can be a lucrative one with numerous perks if it is done right. The author delves into the minds of nightlife's leading experts and the business models of some of the top nightlife groups and venues in the United States. Tying two main topics together, the book explores how these venues break out of the clutter and how industry-specific marketing tactics have evolved in this digital age. Each generation typically employs some form of the "work hard, play hard" lifestyle, and nightlife brands must fight for their "play hard" attention and money. What makes each individual venue a unique nightlife experience, and what influences partygoers to choose that brand over another? This book is a collection of stories from an array of industry professionals who have created successful nightlife experiences.

About The Author:

Alana Udwin graduated from Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2020, majoring in communication with a concentration in hospitality marketing. She was the 2019-2020 executive director of Slope Day, Cornell's annual end-of-the-year music festival with over sixteen thousand attendees, and was an executive board member since her freshman year. Over several summers, Alana interned at different entertainment companies across the country in major cities, including Miami, Los Angeles and New York City. These experiences included a multimedia agency with a prominent nightlife clientele, a creative production studio, and venues as small as local nightclubs to as large as "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden. Through her Cornell curriculum, internship opportunities, and significant personal interest, Alana has developed a strong fascination and deep appreciation for music, entertainment, hospitality, and nightlife. The research Alana has conducted about these fields in her undergraduate courses functioned as a valuable foundation for writing this book. In addition to the breadth of knowledge gained at Cornell, her time spent in Sydney, Australia, helped her gain knowledge on a global level. Alana is the youngest of three siblings and was born and raised in South Florida. She currently resides in New York City and looks forward to making an impact on the nightlife and entertainment industries wherever she goes.

Traditionally, the Race of Hope takes place in Southampton every summer and has been one of the charity’s signature events since 2015. This year, the Race will go virtual with an online opening ceremony and countdown on August 2, 2020.

The Drive-By lunch took place on a perfect, sunny day in front of the Southampton Cultural Center on Pond Lane.  HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss donned a running cap, tee-shirt and face mask in HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow; she waved and thanked guests as they drove by in their cars to receive a delicious picnic lunch to take home. Race of Hope Co-Grand Marshals Jamee Gregory and Arthur Dunnam also joined Gruss to greet guests.

Over 30 top donors attended, lining up by car on Pond Lane, which was decorated with HDRF’s HOPE yellow balloons (recyclable and environmentally friendly). Each guest received a straw basket tied with yellow ribbon and brimming with a lunch of sliced chicken, two side salads, cheese platter, cookies and brownies and fresh cherries and peaches. The baskets were generously provided by Race sponsor Eli Zabar. Other major sponsors are Findlay Galleries and Livingston Builders.

Martin Gruss led the procession of arriving cars in a bright yellow 1972 vintage Ferrari. Giant “Stand with Me” banners of past HDRF celebrity honorees, with quotes about overcoming depression, were lined up to remind guests that depression advocacy is critical for reducing stigma and sparking life-saving conversations.

Audrey Gruss said: “Depression is a grand-challenge public health issue that was critical before COVID-19 and imperative now. Mental health needs to be a top priority for our nation now, and we are so thankful to all our Southampton supporters who are answering the call.”

She added: “Depression is the Number One reason for disability and suicide worldwide, and yet over 35% of people do not respond to conventional medications. That is why HDRF’s advanced research into new and better treatments is so urgent.”

Guests included: Lisa Aery, Steve Bernstein, Janna Bullock, Amanda Gruss Chambers, Eliza Nordeman Davis, Roy Cohen, Max Federbush, Alex Schaffel, Bambi and Roger Felberbaum, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Alan Glatt, Peter Gregory, Kim Heirston, Mariana Kaufman, Anne S. Nordeman, Scott Snyder, Clelia and Tom Zacharias, Richard Ziegelasch, and Silvia Zoullas.

The drive-by lunch kicks off the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Virtual 5K Race of Hope, the same race that has been a summer highlight in Southampton since 2015. This year, all registered runners and walkers can choose their own race route wherever they may be in the country.

The Virtual Race of HopeHere’s how it works:

  1. Go online to www.raceofhopeseries.com and register for the Virtual Race for a fee of $40.

  2. You will then receive fabulous signature Race of Hope gear in the mail.

  3. There will be an online opening ceremony and countdown for the Race on August 2 at 8 AM.

  4. Participants can run or walk their race after the virtual countdown on August 2, or they can march to their own drum and complete the race at any time that is perfect for them.

The Virtual Race live broadcast event on Sunday, August 2 will feature participants’ messages of hope and a Grand Marshal welcome message prior to the race starting at 8:30 AM.  Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane, a Race Ambassador, will have hopeful messages for Race participants as they complete the Race.

LongHouse Reserve Celebrates Opening of Ai Weiwei's Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads

LongHouse Reserve held a small, private outdoor celebration last Saturday for their new installation by Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Head: Bronze. 30 donors and board members gathered in the East Hampton garden wearing masks and making socially distant air kisses.

Founder Jack Lenor Larsen created a unique installation of the 12 large sculptural heads by burying their marble bases around the perimeter of LongHouse's outdoor Albee Amphitheater, allowing visitors to experience the sculptures at almost eye level.

Carol Steinberg, Frank Namad, Jane Johnson

Carol Steinberg, Frank Namad, Jane Johnson

Guests included LongHouse board members Dianne Benson and Lys Marigold, Sherri Donghia and Roger Eulau, Peter Olsen, Suzanne Slesin and Michael Steinberg, Jo Ann and Lee Skolnick, Matko Tomicic, as well as Susie and Michael Gelman, Nina Gillman, Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper, Deborah Nevins, and Ellie Warsh, to name only a few.

The enormous distances the Zodiac Heads have travelled can be compared with the experiences of the artist. In April 2011, Ai Weiwei was detained for 81 days and later released from secret captivity by Chinese Authorities, but his passport was confiscated and he remained under house arrest until July 2015. For the duration of the Zodiac Heads: Bronze exhibition in Chicago in 2014, the sculptures were hooded as a reminder that the artist was still held in China. He now resides in Berlin and Oxford.

This exhibition is the third time the celebrated Chinese artist has participated with LongHouse; in 2013, he was honored with the LongHouse Award. At the time under house arrest in Beijing, he sent a video as an acceptance speech. In 2013 Ai’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads: Gold was also exhibited at LongHouse Reserve

LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre sculpture garden, is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 1pm-5pm. See: https://www.longhouse.org

Celebrate Holi, NYC’s largest Festival Of Colors

Briana Gonzalez

Originally known as Holika, Holi is an ancient Indian festival which holds deep histories and cultural traditions. Briefly, the calculation of the date of Holi is dependent upon a lunar month- when the full and new moons take place. Observed at the end of the winters in the month of March after the full Moon. A day before Holi, known as Holika Dahan, a large bonfire is lit that helps in burning out the evil spirits. This year, Holi can be celebrated on March 14th and March 21st at Stage 48 in NYC, considered New York’s biggest festival of colors.

While the traditional celebration is a time to have fun, understanding the cultural roots of Holi is incredibly important, here are a few things to know:

Various mythological legends are associated with Holi and are celebrated during the festival. These legends and the histories behind them remind people of the power of truth as the moral, and the continuous victory of "good" over "evil."

The festival can be celebrated by those who do not practice Hinduism, the tradition of Holi includes the acceptance of others and turning enemies into friends, forgetting the hardships that may have occurred.

There are various regional names for Holi, and in the evening, people often visit friends and family to exchange gifts and greet them, which often helps revive relationships and strengthen bonds between people.

For more detailed information regarding practices and cultural histories of Holi start by visiting here: Holifestival.org

While the actual date of Holi is on March 10th, Stage 48 is holding a Holi celebration on multiple dates. Recommended that you wear white for this festival of colors, you can grab tickets here.

Friends of The Budapest Festival Orchestra Gala with Steven Van Zandt, Peter Thomas Roth, Mary McFadden

Maestro Fischer announced from his podium, “the arrangement includes some of the original folk melody", which was sung by the members of the Orchestra. It was a memorable performance punctuated by multiple standing ovations. Daisy Soros, chairman emeritus of the Friends of The Budapest Festival Orchestra, sat on an isle in the front row and clearly enjoyed herself. The New York Times wrote, “Always a highlight of any season, the visit of this of this exceptional orchestra and its provocative music director, Ivan Fischer.”

Also there were gala committee members Ambassador and Mrs. Donald Blinken, Beth Jacobs, Heidi Lee Komaromi, Barbara Rogoff, Mr. and Mrs. David M. Tobey, and Stephanie Stokes (the host of a small dinner for the Maestro the evening before at her home). During dinner Maestro Fischer spoke movingly, “We come to New York often. It feels like home and you are our real friends. We love to be here. We’ve a tour planned for many cites in China planned soon so please if you can find a vaccine. We would hate to cancel our trip…. About the orchestra singing tonight. Why does my orchestra sing on stage? We want to set an example, to overcome the inherent fear of singing out loud. Everyone should be singing more. Mothers to their children, all of us. This morning I conducted another concert, a very special one, for children on the Autism spectrum.

Thanks to Lincoln Center and The Friends of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. 150 children and their families came. That was all the room could hold. There was a waiting list twice that length. We try and do a concert like this everywhere we go. Always we do this in New York. It’s important. August 1st, 3rd, and 4th, we return to New York with an opera, Verdi’s Falstaff. There the orchestra is integrated with the singers right on stage and part of the action. It’s part of the Mostly Mozart Festival so please don’t go anywhere else in August.”

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) launched its new young patrons community, MAD Luminaries. Comprising thought leaders under the age of forty-five, the group will serve as a peer-to-peer community of young arts advocates supporting emerging artists through MAD’s Artist Studios program, a highly competitive professional development program for contemporary artists and designers, and the only artist residency of its kind. MAD Luminaries will offer members direct artist interactions and the chance to encourage the artists-in-residence as they expand their creative practice while working on site at the Museum. Seven artists and designers, including one recipient of the MAD Artist Fellowship, are selected for the biannual six-month residency.

“I can’t say enough how important it is for artists to connect directly with art patrons and collectors,” said Hankin. “Making these interactions possible is what MAD Luminaries is all about, and I encourage any young arts advocates to get involved so we can shine a light on even more emerging artists and designers.”

Akinbola said, “The six months I have spent at this museum, working with children, families, all types of visitors, and the MAD curators and leadership, have changed my life. I have gained a community and support network that I know will be with me every step of the way as I move on as an artist.”

Of her upcoming residency, Wright-Ross said, “I have followed the careers of many artists who have had the amazing opportunity to be MAD Fellows, and I am both excited to undertake this journey and delighted to follow in their footsteps.”

Also in attendance were Luminaries Committee members Jeremy Banon, Zachary Beloff, Vincent de Sarthe, Justin Garzone, Casey Kohlberg, and Jaime Weinberg, who are engaged in building the program and supporting young artists.
