What To Do Once You Finally Win The War Against Acne
Adult acne is a condition that plagues 40 to 55 percent of 20 to 40-year-olds in the US - it’s far more common than you would think. While there are plenty of resources available for how to treat adult acne and what steps you need to take to ‘say goodbye to adult acne’, there are very few resources for what you should be doing once you’ve won the war against this irritating skin condition.
Here are some useful tips for steps that you can take once your skin has been clear of acne for a while and you’re sure that you’ve finally won the war. These will help to ensure that your skin remains happy and healthy and that your acne doesn’t make a surprise return.
Stick to your cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine
The chances are that while your skin was in a bad way, you got into a routine when it came to your cleansing, toning and moisturizing. If you want to ensure that your skin remains pimple-free, it’s worthwhile taking skin care seriously even now that you’ve won the war. Often, when our skin care gets put on the backburner, our skin can end up becoming red, sore and increasingly prone to breakouts.
If you can help it, stick to using the same products, the same amount of times a day/week as you did while your skin was repairing from acne. If you use any topical treatments for acne, now that your skin is clear, you may want to slowly reduce how often you use this. Normally, going from once a day to every other day, then to twice a week, and eventually to once a week, tends to work well. Not sure? Ask your dermatologist what’s best.
Get rid of those scars
The chances are that if you had a bad case of adult acne, you’ve been left with a number of acne scars. While you can most probably cover these with makeup, you may not want to have to live with them on a daily basis. This is especially true if you are someone who likes to go makeup free.
The good news is that there are plenty of treatments for acne scars to consider, from using bio oil to help fade them to booking yourself into an aesthetic medical clinic for professional treatment. So if you aren’t a big fan of the marks your breakouts have left behind, there’s no need to panic.
Keep your lifestyle in check
Often, the number one cause of adult acne is lifestyle. For instance, people who smoke are twice as likely to develop adult acne, as are people who consume large amounts of processed foods and sugar. If you made lifestyle changes to give your skin the best chance of getting rid of acne for good, make sure that you stick to them.
If you start relapsing and going back to your old habits, you will find that your skin begins to act up again. Or, at least, you may find this - it could be perfectly fine but is it really worth the risk after you’ve worked so hard for so long?
Once you’ve won the war against acne, be mindful of the TLC that your skin still requires. Your breakouts might have been banished but that doesn’t mean that your skin is fixed for good, that’s why taking proper care of it is so important.
