A Guide to the Best Neighborhoods for Rental Deals in NYC

August 12, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Most renters have heard horror stories about rental prices and apartments in the New York City area. However, you may be able to avoid them if you look in the right locations. If you look in the right areas, it won’t be impossible to find a great deal. You should also be able to find a decent landlord.

By using this guide, you can find a fantastic apartment in NYC to live in. Once you find your place, you can easily find a free rental agreement and put pen to paper with the landlord. Living in New York City is an amazing experience for people who are both natives and first-time New Yorkers alike. It may be difficult to find the perfect place, but let’s not forget New York is a place with endless possibilities.

Check out the neighborhoods below to give you an idea of where to look, and find your cool pad in the city.

Riverdale, Bronx

With its gorgeous architecture and beautiful parks, Riverdale is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the Bronx. It's also a quiet, friendly, family-oriented neighborhood. Let’s not forget that it offers easy access to transportation and shopping. If you're looking for a rental deal and don't mind staying away from Manhattan or Brooklyn, Riverdale might be your perfect spot!

For a 1-bedroom apartment, you’ll be paying slightly under $2,000 on average, which is very affordable for a beautiful neighborhood like this. While you may need to walk a bit to get to a train station, once you’re there, it will only take around 20 minutes to reach the heart of Manhattan.

Kew Gardens, Queens

Kew Gardens is a great place for families. It's located in Queens, close to the city but far enough away that you'll never feel like you're in it. It’s also possible to find a good deal on an apartment in Kew Gardens. There are a couple of subway lines and plenty of bus lines. which makes it accessible.

Kew Gardens is also next door to lots of shopping and dining options. That makes it perfect for people who want access to those things without all the noise and crowds inside Manhattan.

Most importantly, the neighborhood is safe. You’ll always find kids playing on the street or sitting on their stoops while they wait for their parents to come home from work.

Sunnyside, Queens

Sunnyside is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is bounded by 60th Street to the north, the East River to the east, and Woodside to the south.

Sunnyside, like other parts of Queens, is a culturally diverse neighborhood. For example, Irish Americans have been prominent in Sunnyside for over 150 years; many got their start in politics there.

The neighborhood is a convenient location for commuters. The nearby public transportation consists of the Sunnyside station, which is accessible by the 7 train that takes you to midtown.

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

Bay Ridge is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It's considered an outer-borough neighborhood. Although it has all the charm and convenience you would expect from any other Manhattan enclave. Its proximity to Coney Island and its strong Italian heritage make it one of the most vibrant communities in NYC.

Bay Ridge has amazing restaurants, especially pizza places, for when you want to try a classic NYC dish. It’s also close to many parks, including Fort Hamilton Park and Shore Road Park. Both have great views of Lower Manhattan across the water.

There are several options for getting around Bay Ridge by subway or car (or both). The R train will take you directly into Manhattan each day, with stops such as 34th Street–Herald Square. For everything that it offers, you can find some great deals on 1 and 2-bedroom apartments as well.

Washington Heights, Manhattan

If you're looking for a safe, diverse, and well-connected neighborhood in NYC, Washington Heights is an excellent choice. The area is home to a large Dominican population that makes up more than 50 percent of its residents. Washington Heights is also home to large populations of immigrants from the Caribbean, South America, and South Asia.

In addition to being one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Manhattan, it also has numerous perks. It's close to many subway stations and has plenty of restaurants and shops. There are multiple parks nearby; sports facilities are easy to come by (especially if you're interested in baseball). There are so many public transportation options in the neighborhood.

Washington Heights isn’t exactly like renting a place in the Hamptons, but it has improved so much over the years and is a fantastic place to live.

Alternatively, you can rent a room in New York City as a better deal. Services like June Homes offer furnished or unfurnished short term rentals in the city. With a room, you will have lower monthly rent and may share other living expenses such as utilities, internet, and maintenance costs, which can help you save money.
